Traffic and Preparations
When traveling to your winter sports destination, conditions can often be challenging due to low temperatures, slipperiness, snow and crowds. Make sure you travel well prepared with ANWB's winter sports traffic information.
Winter tires
The use of winter tires in Austria is mandatory from November 1 to April 15 in winter conditions. The lack of winter tires can lead to fines, legal consequences and shared liability in accidents because summer tires offer less grip and braking distances can be significantly longer.
Freeway vignet
For both tourist and business traffic, it is mandatory to have an Autobahn vignette for Austrian highways. You can buy this vignette at border crossings in Austria or from the ANWB in the Netherlands.
Details on refueling
In Austria, fuel stations are well distributed, but there are a few specifics to keep in mind. Most stations offer petrol (Euro 95 and SuperPlus 98) and diesel. LPG is only available at about 40 stations across the country, so it’s important to plan ahead if you need this fuel.
Maximum speed
Speed limits are as follows: inside built-up areas 50 km/h, outside built-up areas 100 km/h, and on freeways 130 km/h. Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., speeds of 110 km/h apply on the A10 (Tauern), A12 (Inntal), A13 (Brenner) and A14 (Rheintal).
Snow chains
A blue round sign showing a car tire with a snow chain indicates that snow chains are required. A caption on the sign may indicate which vehicles the rule does not apply to. A similar sign with a red line means that snow chains must be removed.
